STONE CARVING

: more than a medium, its a mentality.

Vision and cognition

The beauty of stone carving can be found through the process of subtraction. As a meduim, the carver reacts to the space of a block/boulder: removing the layers, excavating a curiosity, a feeling, an intuition which guides the hand. As a movement, carving holds the likeness of a sobering truth: each moment in life is an experience that can never be taken back. While metaphorically paralleling the condition of our human mortality, the draw of carving also enlivens our intrinsic dimensionality, stimulating the perceptive field.

Using the subconcious eye, the carver seeks the whole form. The human brain's ability to render 3D is activated in the way the mind is able to percieve the wholeness of another being; For example, when you look at a person's face, the mind is able to fill in the shape of the back of the head in space, with out seeing it. It is with this understanding the sculptor finds movement, recognizing the potential of the form and freeing it from the stone.  As a creative performance, stone carving unveils the subtly of form in volume, blending subconcious, deductive logic with physical touch.

Stone carving is an act of balance. The presence of the hard form finds its counterpart- fragility when carved. This fluidity in descriptive state engenders feelings of sensory transcendence through the sublimation of opposites. As a moving meditation, one can experience an internal dialogue in the space of the stone's silence. Spiritually captivating, stone carving can be a vehicle for harmonizing the "primordial" duality of human and nature. The complexity of raw nature engaged by human tradition through the act of carving is a timeless legacy in human exsistance.
